Hello, my name is Jonathan Shaver and I am an optometrist here at The Eye Center in Fayetteville where I’ve been practicing since 2007. I was born and raised in southern Arkansas in Magnolia, home to Southern Arkansas University. I graduated from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock with a biology and a psychology degree and then went on to graduate from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis with my optometry degree. I also performed a residency in ocular disease at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
I spend about half of my practice time performing primary eye care and the other half treating dry eye disease. Recognizing a growing number of patients who were not getting adequate treatment for their dry eye, I started to become interested in the standards of care and treatments for this confounding and widespread condition. Drawing from the experience and research of experts in the dry eye field and with the support of The Eye Center, I was able to found a dry eye clinic in 2012, which has been growing and evolving ever since. I also feel privileged to be a participating physician in the nationwide InfantSee program, which allows me to provide free eye exams for infants between the ages of six to twelve months. All of these, combined with treating and managing ocular disease and fitting glasses and contact lenses, make for a very rewarding practice.
I have two amazing teenage daughters, Miranda and Naomi, that keep me and my wife, Lesha, quite busy. My wife is a bookbinder and runs her own business, Little Mountain Bindery, here in Fayetteville. We also own a pretty nutty, scruffy dog named Otto.
My main hobby is mountain biking and I am a member of the Ozark Off-Road Cyclist volunteer organization that helps build and maintain off-road trails along with advocating for cycling in Northwest Arkansas. I have also been learning Spanish and classical guitar for quite some time. I am a new member of the Northwest AR Beekeeping Alliance and have hives in my yard.
I feel fortunate to be a part of a practice that invests in innovative equipment and instruments and is progressive in their mindset of the future of eye care and eye disease. The team of doctors here are truly of the highest level and the amazing staff and administration are among the best I have ever worked with.
